How do I Register my Item Lost?

To be reunited with your item you must Register your Item Lost online. It's quick and easy to complete. Please provide a comprehensive description of the item and any relevant details which may help us identify your item(s) and to demonstrate that you are the owner. Once you have Registered your Item Lost online the process of identifying, matching and reuniting you with your lost item can begin.

If you have not Registered your Item Lost as of yet, we recommend you do so as soon as possible. Until you Register your Item Lost, we cannot begin the process of re-uniting you with your item.

We provide lost property services for these airlines at the above airports only.

We do not handle any lost luggage claims for checked-in luggage that has been lost in transit or has not arrived on the baggage carousel at destination airport. If this happens you must contact your airline direct. We will not be able to provide any assistance.

For items lost on outbound flights from the above airports please contact the destination airport or your airline directly.

If you lost an item with one of the above listed airlines at a different airport we will not be able to assist.

We recommend you contact the destination airport and your airline directly.

How long could it take to be reunited with my item?

During busy periods it could take longer for your item to reach us. The time it takes a lost item to reach us is not fixed, varies considerably and is dependent on how quickly the item is found and then handed in.

Once the item has been received, sorted and logged into our Found item database intelligent cross-referencing is undertaken to match found items with lost item records. If a potential match is flagged we will be in touch via email as soon as this happens.

The Airports, Airlines, Rail Stations and Train Operators we work with find significant volumes of items. Once the involved 3rd party transport personnel have logged the relevant information including item categories and descriptors, the Lost Items are sent to our nearest Lost & Found Office for processing.

Please note we will only be in touch when we have a potential item match. If we have not yet been in touch, we do not yet have a potential match to your registered lost item.

I was not reunited my lost item. Why?

Not all lost items are found.
Furthermore, not all lost items are found and then handed into our lost property offices.

We always do our best to re-unite passengers with their lost items but our ability to do so is dependent on factors outside our control:

(a) the item being found
(b) the found item being handed in

If the item does not reach us we will not be able to assist.

How long does it take for found items to reach Lost Property offices?

The time it takes a found item to reach us is not fixed, varies considerably and is dependent on how quickly the item is found and then how quickly it is handed in to our Lost Property Office.

The Airports, Airlines, Rail Stations and Train Operators we work with find significant volumes of items. Once the involved 3rd party transport personnel have logged the relevant information including item categories and descriptors, the Lost Items are eventually sent to our nearest Lost & Found Office for processing.

How long an item takes to reach is outside of our control. The majority of found items take significantly more than 24 hours to reach us. Please note this is from the time they have been found and not from the time the item was originally lost. Exactly how long a found item takes to reach us is outside of our control.

Please allow the following estimated times to be reunited with your item

Station/Train: from 24 hours to 2 weeks *
Airport/Airline: from 24 hours to 5-6 days *

During busy periods it could take longer for your item to reach us.

We always do our best to re-unite passengers with their lost items but our ability and the time it might take to do so is dependent on factors outside our control:

(a) the item being found
(b) the found item being handed in
(c) the time it takes for the finder to get the found item to us.

Please Note: We will only contact you if we have a potential match for you registered lost item. If we do not contact you this means there are no potential matches for your registered lost item.

Please also be aware that not all lost items are found. Furthermore not all lost items are found and then handed into our lost property office. If the item does not reach us we will not be able to assist.

When will LostProperty.org not be able to assist?

There are some instances where LostProperty.org cannot assist with finding and / or repatriating lost items.

LostProperty.org cannot assist when:

Train/Trainline

  • The item is lost at a station other than those we service.
  • The item is lost on a train that does not terminate at one of the mainline stations we service.
  • The item is lost on a Trainline that we do not provide a Lost & Found service on behalf of.

Please note LostProperty.org does not deal with:

We do not provide lost property service for the London Underground. If you have lost an item on the London Underground, please contact TFL - Transport for London direct and DO NOT log an enquiry with us.

Airport/Airline

  • The item is lost at an airport other than those we service.
  • The item is lost on an airline who provide their own lost property service.
  • The item is lost on an airline that we do not provide a Lost & Found service on behalf of.
  • The item is lost on a flight inbound to an airport where we only provide Lost property services for items lost at the airport itself.

Please note LostProperty.org does not provide any service for:

  • Items lost on outbound flights from Budapest, Helsinki or the UK.
  • Items lost on inbound flights to Budapest or Helsinki
  • Luggage that is lost in transit on any airline
  • Checked-in bags that do not arrive at your destination
  • Items lost in the hold of the plane

Is there a charge to be reunited with a lost item?

Please note there a Lost Property Item Management Charge is payable before your identified and matched item can be collected or returned by carrier. These charges are set nationally to cover the cost of providing the Lost Property / Lost & Found return service.

These costs include but are not limited to:

  • Manual sorting, logging and processing of all found items.
  • Manual entry of each found item into Found Item Database.
  • Manual matching of registered lost items and found items.
  • Storing of lost items and arrangement of their return.
  • Staffing & Systems costs.

If you choose to have your item returned by carrier a separate additional delivery charge will be payable.

How much will delivery by carrier cost?

How much will delivery by carrier cost?

Delivery by Carrier is available for an additional charge. It is not included in the Lost Property Item Management Charge which is payable before any item can be collected or returned by carrier.

The Delivery by Carrier price will be determined by the size and weight of your item when suitably packed for transit. The service is available to any national or international address.

For items lost in the UK
From 1st July 2021, all shipments sent to EU countries and overseas are subject to customs clearance, even personal effects.
Please also be aware that parcels containing alcohol may be subject to country-specific restrictions and high rates of duty and excise can apply.
In addition to current prohibited items, we cannot accept foodstuffs to any EU country.

For items lost in the EU
Items can be sent within EU without having to clear customs or requiring a customs invoice.
To send items from the EU to the UK Mainland and Northern Ireland will require customs clearance, commercial invoice and appropriate customs documentation.

I need my item delivered from the UK internationally, will it be subject to customs charges?

All parcels sent from the UK internationally are now subject to customs charges. From 1st July 2021, all shipments sent to EU countries and overseas are subject to customs clearance, even personal effects. Please also be aware that parcels containing alcohol may be subject to country-specific restrictions and high rates of duty and excise can apply. In addition to current prohibited items, we cannot accept foodstuffs to any EU country.

Please note customs charges are determined when the parcel arrives at destination, therefore it's not possible to determine whether you will be charged and by how much in advance. LostProperty.org are not responsible for any charges that destination customs authorities apply to your parcel.

Destination customs charges, if incurred, are the customers responsibility only.

I need my item delivered from the Europe to UK / Northern Ireland, will it be subject to customs charges?

All parcels sent from Europe to the UK are now subject to customs charges. From 1st July 2021, all shipments sent to the UK from EU countries are subject to customs clearance, even personal effects. Please also be aware that parcels containing alcohol may be subject to specific restrictions and high rates of duty and excise can apply. In addition to current prohibited items foodstuffs we cannot accept any foodstuffs for delivery into the UK.

If my item is delivered from the UK to an international destination does the price I pay include customs charges?

The delivery price you pay for shipment from the UK to an international destination does not include customs charges. What these charges could be are not known at the time the delivery is booked. The decision on whether destination customs charges are payable is made by the relevant authorities in the delivery country who will contact the named recipient if there are any charges to be paid.

LostProperty.org are not responsible for any charges that destination customs authorities apply to your parcel. Destination customs charges, if incurred, are the customers responsibility only

Please note that the delivery prices from EU to Europe also do not include customs.

How are registered lost items matched with found items?

We recommend you Register your Item Lost via the online form as soon as you discover your belongings are missing.

Please be aware of the estimated times it can take for us to receive lost items. We ask that you allow the following times for re-unification with your item.

Stations / Trains: from 2 hours to 2 weeks*
Airports / Airlines: from 2 hours to 5-6 days*

Matching lost items with their owner is now easier than ever thanks to the sophisticated logging, categorisation and matching system used by LostProperty.org. Staff at Airports / Rail Stations photograph found items and also provide detailed item descriptions for direct upload to our database. This means that when you Register your Item Lost online, and provide appropriate detail, we can begin the matching process so as to identify your items quickly and accurately.

We sort, process and store thousands of lost items per day and will always do our best to re-unite you with your item as quickly as is possible. Please understand that the time a found item takes to reach us is:

  • not fixed and varies considerably
  • dependent on whether the item is found
  • dependent on how quickly the found item is handed in to our offices

Once a found item is eventually received, processed and logged, intelligent cross-referencing suggestions are provided by our system to suggest potential matches between 'Found' items and customer 'Lost' records. When a potential match is flagged one of our Lost Property Officers will get in touch (using the the contact details provided when you registered your item lost online) to verify ownership and establish your preferred way to be reunited with your lost property.

Please note we will only be in touch when we have a potential item match, if we have not yet been in touch, we do not yet have a potential match to your registered lost item.

How are matched items returned to their rightful owners?

The following information is required to identify, match, verify and return items to their rightful owners.

In order to ensure the safe return of property to its rightful owner, we have stringent security measures in place that allow us to detect fraudulent claims. The information gathered by our systems will be shared with the police in the event that a fraudulent enquiry is identified.

Can I Register my item Lost in-store?

We recommend where possible you Register your Item Lost online via the online form

However, if this is not possible you can visit the appropriate Lost Property Office to complete a Register your Item Lost form in person. Please check the specific Lost Property Office Opening Hours in advance to avoid disappointment.

During Lost Property opening hours a member of our staff will be able to help you register your item as lost by completing a Lost Item Registration Form. If your lost item has been processed and matched it is often possible to release your belongings immediately subject to the provision of identification, proof of ownership, and the payment of the applicable Lost Property Item Management Charge.

Please note until you Register your Item Lost either via the online form or in-store using a paper based form we cannot begin the process of re-uniting you with your item.

My item has been located, how do I get it back?

When we have notified you that we are in possession of your lost property, the next step is to reunite you with your belongings. We offer 3 convenient return options.

  1. Delivery by Carrier (An additional charge is payable) - We can send your lost property directly to your preferred home or office address.
    With our secure carrier delivery service we can deliver your item to a UK, European or international address.
    The cost of your delivery will be determined by the dimensions of your item when suitably packed for transit using our selected carrier.
    This service is provided for an additional fee and is not included in the Lost Property Item Management Charge.

    Please note the Lost Item Management Charge is payable regardless of your method of return.

    For items lost in the UK
    From 1st July 2021, all shipments sent to EU countries and overseas are subject to customs clearance, even personal effects.
    Please also be aware that parcels containing alcohol may be subject to country-specific restrictions and high rates of duty and excise can apply.
    In addition to current prohibited items, we cannot accept foodstuffs to any EU country.

    Parcels sent to the UK from EU countries will also be subject to customs clearance. This is applicable even to personal effects. We cannot accept parcels containing alcohol or foodstuffs for delivery into the UK.

    For items lost in the EU
    Items can be sent within EU without having to clear customs or requiring a customs invoice.
    To send items from the EU to the UK Mainland and Northern Ireland will require customs clearance, commercial invoice and appropriate customs documentation.

    LostProperty.org are not responsible for any charges that destination customs authorities apply to your parcel. Destination customs charges, if incurred, are the customers responsibility only.

    For the return of any lost item in addition to the full detail provided in the Register your Item Lost online form we require a government approved photographic ID (i.e. passport, driving licence, identity card, etc.). Additional proof of identification or ownership, such as telephone bills, receipts, or photographs, that you can provide will help us in expedite the identification and match of your lost item. Due to our commitment to the security of your possessions, if we are unable to conclusively identify you as the owner of the lost property, we cannot release the item to you.

    For repatriation of matched items by carrier scanned copies of your government approved photographic ID must be provided via email. Additional proof of ownership will also be requested if the item is of high value.

    Please be aware before we can send your items back to you stringent checks are made on all information provided to prevent fraudulent claims and ensure the safe return of all items to their rightful owner. Where a fraudulent claim is identified all information gathered by our systems will be shared directly with the police.
  2. Collect from the Lost Property / Lost & Found Office - If you are able to travel to the relevant Lost Property / Lost & Found Office, you can collect your matched belongings in person. You must be able to provide a detailed description of the item, valid government approved photographic ID and, if you are reclaiming a high-value item, you will need to be in possession of proof of ownership documentation.

    The Lost Property Item Management Charge must be paid in advance of your item being released. Payment can be made in-store or online in advance.
  3. Send a Nominated person to collect from the Lost Property / Lost & Found Office - If you cannot collect from our Lost Property / Lost & Found in person and would like a friend to pick up your lost property they will need to provide their own photographic proof of identity as well as a copy of your ID. You will also need to provide a Letter of Authorisation for your nominated person / friend to collect on your behalf.

    The Lost Property Item Management Charge must be paid in advance of your item being released. Payment can be made in-store or online in advance.

How long is the lost property held for?

Lost property is held for a maximum of 90 days*. Items deemed as hazardous or outside our remit of handling may be disposed of immediately or even handed over to the police or relevant authorities. Perishables will also be disposed of. There are no refrigeration facilities at our Lost Property / Lost & Found Offices.

*At Manchester Airport and London Stansted Airport items are held for 60 days only.

How likely is it that I will be reunited with my lost item?

Between 25 of lost items eventually arrive at our Lost Property / Lost & Found Offices.

This means there is a chance you lost item will not be found and / or handed in. We always do our best to re-unite passengers with their lost items but our ability to do so is dependent on factors outside our control:

(a) the item being found
(b) the found item being handed in

If the item does not reach a Lost Property Office LostProperty.org will not be able to assist.

What happens to unclaimed lost property?

After 90 days* unclaimed items are either donated to charity or sent to public auction. We cannot disclose where these auctions are due to take place.

*At Manchester Airport and London Stansted Airport items are held for 60 days only.
